BISH DAD FACES LONG RECOVERY

Topics: General

WARREN - The family of John J. Bish, a prominent Warren resident who suffered a stroke last week, expects a lengthy recovery process and has established a fund to help with recuperation expenses, a family spokesman said yesterday.

Heather K. Bish, of Warren, daughter of John Bish, said yesterday the family has made inquiries at a number of facilities, including some as far away as New Jersey and Georgia.

She said that at a friend's suggestion, she has established the John J. Bish Recovery Fund to help defray costs of future medical care that may not be covered by her father's insurance

John J. Bish, 58, is the father - and Heather Bish the sister - of homicide victim Molly A. Bish, who disappeared from her lifeguard post at Comins Pond here on June 27, 2000. Her remains were found three years later in Palmer. The case remains unsolved.

John Bish and his wife, Magdalen, have worked tirelessly, not only toward a solution to their late daughter's case, but in the interest of protecting others from crime. The couple also has a son, John J. Bish Jr.

The elder John Bish remained in critical condition yesterday at University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, according to hospital officials and Heather Bish.

"We're not out of the woods yet."

She said her father had been ill for a couple of days last week and sought treatment on June 14 in the emergency room at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Ware, where, she said, he showed symptoms of anemia. Further tests were scheduled for June 18, but he became severely ill at home on June 15 and was taken to Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge, she said.

He later was taken by medical helicopter to the medical center in Worcester, where a hematoma was found on the right side of his brain, indicating a stroke, she said.

Currently, he is sedated, and only the immediate family is allowed visits, she said.

"I hope everyone will keep praying," she said. "It will be a long recovery. He's a fighter. I think he'll pull through."

She said his "whole purpose" has been to find his daughter Molly's killer and prevent such slayings from happening to others.

Donations to the recovery fund may be made at any branch of Spencer Savings Bank. Checks should be made payable to the fund. Donations also may be mailed to Spencer Savings Bank, 176 Main St., Spencer, MA 01562
