WASHINGTON - A California man is scheduled to be arraigned in Tampa on July 12 after he and an entertainment company were hit with federal obscenity charges.
Paul Little, 50, of Altadena, and Maxworld Entertainment are charged with five counts of transmitting obscene matter by Internet and five counts of sending obscene matter through the U.S. mail to Florida addresses.
The 10-count federal indictment was returned May 17 in Tampa and unsealed Wednesday.
Little, who also is known as 'Max Hardcore' and 'Max Steiner,' is described by federal prosecutors here and in Tampa as a nationally known director, producer and star of full-length films that feature 'severe violence towards the female performers participating in the acts.'
The investigation continues, said Justice Department spokesman Bryan Sierra, who would not say whether more arrests were possible in the case.
Little turned himself in to authorities in California on Wednesday. His arraignment July 12 is set for U.S. District Court in Tampa.
If convicted, Little could be sentenced to as much as five years in prison on each of the charges, Sierra said.
A man who answered the telephone Thursday at Little's house identified it as the location for Maxworld Entertainment. That man would not comment on the charges against Little, referring questions to Santa Monica lawyer Jeffrey Douglas.
Douglas, who did not return calls, sits on the board of directors of the Free Speech Coalition, based in Canoga Park, Calif. The coalition describes itself is a trade association that serves as a lobbying arm and, if need be, legal defender of the adult entertainment industry.
Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher of the Justice Department's Criminal Division and acting U.S. Attorney James Klindt for the Middle District of Florida announced Little's arrest Thursday in a news release that included a copy of the indictment.
The indictment alleges that Little - through the entertainment company - distributed pornographic video films to post office boxes in Florida.
The indictment also alleges that to help promote these films, the defendants used a Web site for the purpose of selling and distributing the films by transmitting over the Internet five obscene video clips as promotional trailers.
The news release states that prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of the obscene films, the gross profit from the distribution of the films and all property used in connection with the alleged obscenity crimes, including Little's residence in Altadena.
Federal prosecutors also will seek forfeiture of all the Internet domain names used.
