Ex-Convict Arrested On Felony Sex Charges

Topics: News

TAMPA - After serving about seven years in prison for impregnating a 16-year-old, Mark Allen Browder reached out to another girl that age and a younger friend, plying them with wine coolers before molesting them, police said.

Tampa police on Wednesday said they think Browder, 36, of 1922 N. 59th St., might have had contact with other possible victims through that 16-year-old, who is his relative.

Police accused him of having sex with that girl three times since his release from a state prison in August.

He also is accused of fondling the teenager and her 13-year-old friend last week during a sleepover, police said.

"This is obviously a dangerous man," police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said Wednesday. "We like to think people who commit these types of crimes can get help. But this is a man who belongs behind bars. … Less than a year after he is out of prison, he is back at it again."

Browder was held without bail Wednesday at Orient Road Jail. He is charged with six counts of felony lewd or lascivious molestation and three counts of felony sexual battery.

According to McElroy, Browder on Friday bought wine coolers for the 16-year-old and two 13-year-old girls who were spending the night at her home.

One of the 13-year-olds became so drunk, she passed out, McElroy said.

About 9:30 p.m., Browder took the other two girls to another location, where he molested them, McElroy said.

McElroy did not know whether the 16-year-old's family was aware she and the other girl had left the home with Browder.

Sunday, the 16-year-old's mother called police to report the molestation, McElroy said.

Upon interviewing the girls, police learned Browder had had sexual intercourse with the 16-year-old on three occasions.

Police asked anyone with information about other children having contact with Browder to call detectives at (813) 231-6130.

Reporter Valerie Kalfrin can be reached at (813) 259-7800.
