Cop charged with molestation fired
Topics: NewsDEFUNIAK SPRINGS - (AP) -- A police officer was fired after it was discovered that he was charged with sexually abusing a 5-year-old girl.
Samuel McCormick was dismissed hours after Police Chief Mike Adkinson learned the circumstances of the case.
Adkinson said the charges are serious enough for dismissal, even though McCormick has not been convicted.
''You can't tolerate that,'' Adkinson said.
McCormick had worked for the DeFuniak Springs police for a month and was still on probationary employment.
McCormick was charged Sunday with first-degree sexual abuse involving a child in Alabama. He had been released from the Covington County jail on $150,000 bond.
A background check on McCormick found no reason for concern, Adkinson said.
