Carlie's brother recovering
Topics: NewsSARASOTA COUNTY -- Carlie Brucia's 9-year-old brother remains hospitalized after suffering serious head injuries this week in a car crash near Bahia Vista Street and McIntosh Road.
Leif Dillon Schorpen, 2700 block Blossom Drive, was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg before being taken to nearby All Children's Hospital. He was listed in serious condition Wednesday.
Leif's sister, Carlie, made national headlines in 2004 after she was abducted and murdered. The crash that injured Leif happened Monday at about 8:30 a.m.
Bryan Louis Disbrow, 36, of Sarasota, was driving his jeep east on Bahia Vista and tried to use the turn lane to pass the car in front of him, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Ronald Kansler, 67, also of the 2700 block of Blossom Drive, was in the turn lane waiting to make a left onto McIntosh Road.
Schorpen was in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt, the FHP said. Teresa Kansler, 61, was in the front seat and was not wearing a seat belt either. She received minor injuries. The crash is under investigation.
