Holiday Safety Tips

Topics:

From Team Hope

Attached are holiday safety tips that I received from NCMEC security. They contain good solid tips for us to follow, not just during the holiday season, but all year.

I hope these help you as you are all very important and I want you to be safe.

Dress appropriately:
Wear comfortable shoes that will allow you to move quickly – avoid high heels, flip flops,
clogs, etc. Don’t advertise – avoid wearing expensive jewelry and watches.

Take only what you need:
If you do not intend to use your checkbook – leave it home. Same for credit/ATM cards, etc.

If checks are lost/stolen – cancel that entire account. Don’t just stop the few check numbers
which were lost. Thieves will wait months and then use the checks. Remember they already
have your checking account number and can order items over the phone or on-line with it.

Stay focused:
Remember to eat and drink (but don’t leave packages unattended at the Food Court!)
Stay mentally alert to your surroundings

Parking:
If you will be shopping after dark, park under a light pole – even if it is a little further away.
Most assaults and robberies occur when a person gets in or out of their vehicle

Find a landmark – you need to avoid having to search for your car. It will distract you and
make you an more inviting target to the bad guys.

Elevators:
Position yourself by the control panel. If someone accosts you push all of the floor buttons.
Every time the elevator stops is an opportunity for escape or to get help.
If someone makes you uncomfortable – get off. (or don’t get on)

Pickpockets:
Use a pocketbook with a flap. Keep flap in towards your body. Keep it closed/zipped.
Put wallet in front pants pockets.
Keep one hand on pocketbook/packages when in bathroom stall - thieves will reach
under/over to grab your things. (Or team up with a friend and take turns!)
If “accidentally” bumped or pushed IMMEDIATELY check for your wallet!

Identity Theft:
Don’t give out your Social Security #. Don’t let a clerk take your credit card out of your
sight. Shield your PIN from prying eyes. Don’t ever respond to an unsolicited E Mail
or phone call from anyone asking you to verify your account information! If you are the
victim of Identity Theft, contact the police and check out the Federal Trade Commissions
website at www.ftc.gov/idtheft for additional information.
