Around the Corner
Topics: GeneralWhen I was a boy my best friend was Jimmy Byrd. Jimmy and I went to school together; played ball; double dated, in fact we were inseparable even joining the United States Air Force on the Buddy Plan. It was there that we were separated and distance took its toll on our friendship. Each with our own lives, somehow we communicated less and less. After awhile the moving from base to base and town to town we lost contact. Through the years I tried to locate Jimmy to no avail. Although I thought of him often and remember the goodtimes, the days passed and then it happened. Just a few days ago I was notified through a friend that Jimmy had passed. I have been given the address of his wife and I will send her a letter before the new year but I am so ashamed of myself for not putting forth that extra effort to find Jimmy and call him.
The following is a verse that has always been my favorite and now it jumps off the page at me. If you have a friend or family member that you have not contacted recently, do it today. In memory of James Ralph Byrd, Jr.
Rest in peace my friend!
Bud Fisher
Tampa
Around the corner I have a friend
In this great city that has no end;
Yet days go by and weeks rush on,
And before you know it a year has gone;
And I never see my old friend's face;
For life is swift and terrible race.
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell,
And he rang mine. We were younger then;
But now we are busy, tired men----
Tired with playing a foolish game;
Tired with trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow," I say, "I'll call on Jim,
Just to show I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes;
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner------yet miles away.
"Here's a telegram sir"------Jim died today!
And that's what we get , and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend
