BARTOW - A former Department of Homeland Security spokesman was sentenced Friday to five years in state prison as part of a plea deal.

Brian J. Doyle, 56, had pleaded no contest in September to charges he used a computer to solicit sex from a Polk County detective posing as a 14-year-old girl.

Circuit Judge Dale Durrance handed down the maximum penalty allowed under the plea deal. After the prison term, Doyle must serve 10 years of probation.

Just before sentencing, Doyle pleaded for probation only, saying, “My life is in ruins.’’

A psychologist who specializes in treating sex offenders had recommended probation and treatment instead of incarceration. A parade of family and friends also testified on Doyle’s behalf during Friday’s hearing.
