Lawyers Want Couey Trial Moved

Topics: News

INVERNESS – Lawyers for the man accused in the rape and slaying of Jessica Marie Lunsford want his trial again moved, arguing the case should be heard in an area that has a demographic similar to Citrus County, where the third-grader was buried alive in early 2005. John Evander Couey 48, is scheduled to be tried Feb. 12 in Miami, eight days after the Super Bowl is held there.

He is accused of first-degree murder, kidnapping, sexual battery on a child under 12 and burglary with battery. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted of the murder charge.

Circuit Judge Ric Howard initially moved the trial from Inverness to Tavares, which is in the same judicial circuit, but in July he said it would be impossible to find an impartial jury there. He chose Miami as an alternate late this summer.
